The Souderton-Telford Historical Society is set to host its “Art in Sacred Spaces” tour on May 16 from noon to 5 p.m.
The self-guided tour of community treasures includes opportunities to visit six area churches in addition to viewing local historic artifacts. Sites include St. Phillips Orthodox Church in Souderton and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Telford. Fraktur and other artifacts from the Mennonite Heritage Center will be on display at Zwingli United Church of Christ. Other participating congregations include Emmanuel Lutheran Church (Souderton), Trinity UCC (Telford) and Zion Mennonite Church (Souderton), said a Souderton-Telford Historical Society press release.
Throughout the tour, guides will be on hand to direct guests’ attention to artistic and historical features. Guests can also wander through designated areas on their own. Some participating locations will have special music and light refreshments, said the release.
“While many rightfully admire the masterpieces found in European buildings, our own community is home to extraordinary works of art, stained glass, and architecture,” said the Society. “Too often, these treasures remain hidden behind the walls of buildings we pass by everyday. ‘Art in Sacred Spaces’ is an opportunity to discover and appreciate the art, stained glass, architecture, and stories that make our communities special.”
“Cultivating an appreciation for local art and congregations enriches the community and breaks down barriers that might be in place on Sunday morning visits,” added Regina B. Wenger, Educational Curator at the Mennonite Heritage Center.
Tickets are $15. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets online in advance, but tickets will also be available for purchase at Zwingli UCC (350 Wile Ave., Souderton) during the event. Tickets can be purchased at soudertontelfordhistory.org/current-events and use the QR code or stop by Zwingli UCC on May 16, said the release.
