What initially looked like a rebuilding year for Souderton boys lacrosse quickly turned into something much bigger, thanks in large part to a talented freshman class that immediately made an impact.
Seven freshmen stepped into major varsity roles last season, according to PhillyBurbs, and helped lead the Big Red to a 17-4 record, a second-place finish in the Suburban One League National Conference and a berth in the District One Class 3A quarterfinals.
Players and coaches credited the team’s chemistry and veteran leadership for helping the younger athletes transition smoothly to varsity competition.
Now, with that young core more experienced, expectations have grown. Head coach Craig Hunsberger said the team intentionally scheduled tougher opponents this season to prepare for playoff competition, while players say one major hurdle still remains: Pennridge. According to the report, the Rams have denied Souderton the conference title in each of the last three seasons, and another showdown between the rivals was set to determine this year’s SOL National champion.
Beyond a league title, Souderton is chasing a berth in the PIAA state playoffs.
