As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, Hatfield Township is taking a closer look at a question often left out of the history books: not everyone supported independence.

The Hatfield250 Committee will host a free public program on Monday, May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Hatfield Township Municipal Building, 1950 School Road, featuring a panel discussion on who supported the American Revolution, who opposed it and the reasons behind those divisions.

The event will bring together historians and religious leaders to explore how perspectives on independence varied across communities, including the influence of faith, politics and local ties to the British Crown. Organizers say the discussion aims to highlight the complexity of the era, moving beyond the traditional narrative of unanimous support for the Revolution.

Moderating the panel is Dr. Emily Sneff, an early American historian and nationally recognized expert on the Declaration of Independence. Sneff, who earned her doctorate from William & Mary, has served as a consulting curator for major exhibitions tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial, including projects at the Museum of the American Revolution and Historic Trappe. She is also the author of "When the Declaration of Independence Was News."

The program is part of Hatfield250, a broader initiative marking the lead-up to the United States’ 250th anniversary through educational events and community programming. Admission is free and open to the public.
