Pennridge School District celebrates 14th Wall of Fame induction ceremony

Established in 2001, the Pennridge Wall of Fame honors graduates who have achieved exceptional success and made meaningful contributions in their professions and communities

The Pennridge School District recognized five distinguished alumni during its 14th Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony on April 23.

Established in 2001, the Pennridge Wall of Fame honors graduates who have achieved exceptional success and made meaningful contributions in their professions and communities. The 2026 inductees represent a diverse range of accomplishments across military service, athletics, healthcare, and scientific research. The ceremony is a biannual celebration, said a Pennridge School District press release.

This year’s class of inductees includes:

Tim Abruzzo (Class of 2012) is a 2017 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a member of the Division I men’s basketball team, where he earned the Rear Admiral Ronald Marryott Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Naval Academy men’s basketball player.

He served as a Fire Control Officer aboard the USS Laboon (DDG 58) from 2019 to 2022, deploying to U.S. Central Command in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel and overseeing air and ballistic missile defense operations. He also played a key role in planning and executing Operation Continuing Promise 2023, serving on the command element staff managing medical care provided by USNS Comfort to more than 13,000 patients across the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, and Haiti, said the release.

Jake Crouthamel (Class of 1956) built a legacy defined by leadership, vision, and lasting impact on collegiate athletics. As head football coach at Dartmouth College from 1971 to 1977, he led the program to three consecutive Ivy League Championships (1971, 1972, 1973), establishing a culture of excellence.

He later transitioned to administration, beginning a transformative 27-year tenure as athletic director at Syracuse University, where he played a key role in the formation of the original Big East Conference and oversaw the construction and opening of the Carrier Dome in 1980, one of the most iconic venues in collegiate sports, said the release.

John Gutekunst (Class of 1962) first made his mark at Pennridge as a member of the 1959 baseball team that captured a Bux-Mont League division title, coached by his father. He went on to a distinguished career in college football, serving as head coach at the University of Minnesota, where he led the program to four winning seasons and two bowl appearances, including a victory in the Independence Bowl.      

His contributions to the sport were further recognized when he was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association in 2000, said the release.

Dr. David R. McPhillips (Class of 1976) has provided exceptional leadership in the field of optometry, serving as president of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association and holding leadership roles with the American Optometric Association, American Academy of Optometry, and regional professional organizations.

A passionate advocate for global eye care, he co-founded the Pennsylvania chapter of Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH), participated in more than 50 international missions, and served as president of VOSH International. His work has been instrumental in developing permanent eye clinics in Haiti and Guatemala and in establishing Haiti’s first optometry program. He also earned a gold medal as a member of Team USA at the 2024 Pan American Games in pickleball, said the release.

Dr. Bennett Van Houten (Class of 1976) has built an internationally recognized career in cancer research, with work spanning the National Institutes of Health and multiple academic institutions focused on the role of mitochondria in human disease and DNA repair. His laboratory has made significant contributions to the field, earning honors such as the NIH Director’s Award (2002), the Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for Support of Science (2008), and election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2024).               

Over his career, he has published more than 300 scientific articles and book chapters and has mentored dozens of postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers, including many who have coauthored published work, said the release.

“The Wall of Fame is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary accomplishments of our graduates,” said Tim Keddie, principal of Pennridge High School. “These individuals embody the values of Pennridge and serve as an inspiration to our students and community.”
