  • Things To Do

A pair of events are approaching soon that will give North Wales residents a chance to do some spring cleaning, and shopping.

Borough officials are inviting the public to attend the town’s annual Earth Day Extravaganza on April 25 and the kickoff of the North Wales Farmers Market the next week.

From 9 a.m. to noon on April 25, residents can bring to borough hall most old recyclables, including paper to be shredded, used eyeglasses, used clothing and textiles, old shoes, boots or sneakers, torn or tattered US flags, scrap metal, and fire extinguishers.

Items containing refrigerant including air conditioners, freezers, and refrigerators, can also be recycled, as can TVs with a limit of one per household and no console TVs. Heavier recyclables including auto parts, wheels, car batteries, new or used oil, coolant, chemicals or used tires (limit two per resident) can also be recycled that day at Hink’s Garage, 346 W. Walnut Street.

The recycling event will be held rain or shine and a full list of recyclables and sponsors is available on the borough’s website.

Borough residents are also asked to take part in a ‘Spring Greening’ donation drive for Cradles to Crayons,  where residents can donate gently used clothing including shorts, short- or long-sleeved shirts, pants, coats and shoes. Clothing sizes newborn through adult XXL will be accepted, and donations can be made at borough hall through April 25.

Also happening on May 3 at 2 p.m. will be ‘Heroes Come in All Sizes,’ a puppet shot to be held at the North Wales Arts and Cultural Center,125 N. Main Street. Reach for the Stars Puppet Productions will put on the show, inspired by the classic fable ‘The Lion and the Mouse.’ That center will also host The Bethlehem Piano Quintet on May 8 at 7:30 p.m., with info on both events available on the borough website; admission is free with donations appreciated.

The following weekend will be the kickoff of what could be a new tradition: the North Wales Farmers Market, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays through October. Organizers said in March they plan to attract dozens of vendors that will bring artisan crafts, food and more to the area of Summit Street near North Wales Elementary School, and organizers said this week that details are still being finalized and will be posted on the market’s social media pages as confirmed.
