A community bike ride is planned this weekend to celebrate the addition of new bike lanes along Welsh Road and East Main Street in Lansdale Borough.
The ride, organized by Bike North Penn, is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at about 1:20 p.m. at the Lansdale Freight House on South Broad Street. The event will take place following the Freight House ribbon cutting ceremony and will utilize portions of the Liberty Bell Trail.
Participants will travel along the newly-installed bike lanes on Welsh Road from Line Street to North Wales Road before continuing to Assi Plaza in Montgomery Township.
After a brief stop, the group will return to the Freight House along the same route, covering about six miles in total.
Bike North Penn President William Jackson said the lanes mark an important milestone for the borough, noting they were added during PennDOT’s resurfacing project in 2025.
“This is a big step for Lansdale Borough,” Jackson said. “Because they took advantage PennDOT’s resurfacing of this section of the roadway in 2025, it was cost effective to add these lanes to make it safer for bikers already using this road.”
Jackson said the new lanes help address limitations for east-west travel by bicycle, particularly due to the Wissahickon Creek, and provide safer access between downtown Lansdale and destinations such as the YMCA, Hilltop Shopping Center and grocery stores.
“We hope this is the first of other lanes which will come to Lansdale, making it more bikable for those without cars and encourage local kids and adults to get out and get some exercise,” he said. “Biking is recreation for some, but transportation for many. These lanes, along with Lansdale’s progress building out the Liberty Bell Trail start to address those needs.”
Bike North Penn is a non-profit bicycle advocacy group formed in August of 2022. They lea
community bike rides in the North Penn region and organize support for local trails and enhancements to infrastructure to encourage bikes as an option for recreation and transportation with a regional view.
The group believes biking is a benefit for physical and mental health, promotes citizenship, is good for the environment and should be available to everyone in the area.
