Democrats have swept the race for the Souderton Area School Board.

Unofficial results from the Montgomery County Board of Elections showed the Democratic slate of candidates winning all four open seats on the school board in Tuesday’s election, cutting into the Republicans’ 9-0 majority and successfully defeating the board’s current president and vice president.

In the hotly contested race, Democratic newcomers Corinne DeGeiso, Alexandra Wisser, Rosemary Buetikofer and Andrew Souchet ran on the “Souderton Area for Responsible Leadership” team, while current GOP board president Stephen Nelson, vice president Andrew Landis, incumbent Janet Flisak and newcomer Stephen Long ran on the “Keep Souderton Strong” team.

Wisser topped the field with 8,633 votes, followed by DeGeiso with 8,416, Buetikofer with 8,418 and Souchet with 8,286. On the Republican side, Landis trailed with 8,210 votes, followed by Nelson with 8,020, Flisak with 6,983 and Long with 7,990.

In a joint statement, the Souderton Area for Responsible Leadership team described feeling “both humbled and energized by the election results.”

“[We] want to acknowledge that the hard work is just beginning. It will take collaboration, cooperation and relationship-building with the five remaining directors to truly turn their campaign priorities into meaningful change for Souderton Area School District,” said the team. “Our community has spoken and we hope that the current directors are prepared to listen to those voices. As the four candidates become directors, the SAFRL organization remains committed to holding the SASD school board accountable, and to working to elevate community voices.”

Results will remain unofficial until certified by the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
