The best thing about living in Greater Philadelphia is there is nearly never a dull moment. There are so many exciting events in and around our own communities, you can have a romantic date night, plan a great meet-up with friends, or map out some family memories for a fun time with the kids. Check out This Week Now for some regional events sure to keep all the members of the household happy and entertained.

Pokemon Tournament in Blue Bell

Alternative Universes in Blue Bell will host a Pokemon TCG League Challenge on Wednesday, Nov.  27 with registration open at 5:30 p.m. and the tournament starting at 6:30 p.m. League challenges are the “lowest level of Pokemon TCG Championship Series Events,” meaning players at any skill level can join in the fun and even earn championship points. Once a player earns enough points, they are able to qualify for the Pokemon TCG World Championships. Alternative Universes in Blue Bell is located in the Penn Square Shopping Center, 211 W. Germantown Pike in East Norriton. There is a $10 fee for entry. The format will be a standard Swiss style, best of one matches, 30-minute rounds, no top cut, and the number of rounds will be determined by the overall attendance. Top winners will receive store credit in the form of a gift card useable at any of the AU’s locations.

Board and Barrel: A Charcuterie and Wine Pairing Workshop

On Sunday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m., the Cyrenity Sips Winery in Hatboro will host a Board and Barrel: Charcuterie and Wine Pairing Workshop to guide guests through the process of making the perfect charcuterie board to complement a selection of fine wines. The event is in-person and will be both educational and fun. The winery invites those 21 and over to “elevate your hosting game” with this evening session designed to build your skills. YMCA’s Gobble Wobble 5K

The Willow Grove YMCA will host a Gobble Wobble 5K event on Thursday, Nov. 28. Before you enjoy an indulgent day of your Thanksgiving feast, why not burn off some calories to make room? Participants can gather on Old York Road near the Abington Early Learning Center (1073 Old York Road in Abington) on Thanksgiving morning, with a start time of 9 a.m. Pre-registration is available online here. The cost is $40 for those age 13 and over, with kids ages 6 to 12 $25. Those under 6 are free to participate. All proceeds to the races throughout Greater Philadelphia will benefit the Y’s Financial Assistance Program, which opens the doors of the area’s facilities to families in need. Children’s Storytime

The Barnes & Nobel in Broomall, located at 1991 Sproul Road, will host Children’s Storytime sessions on both Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. Hosted in the retail store’s Children’s Department, each storytime features new titles and classic favorites. Let’s Sing a Capella!

A four-part a cappella harmony ensemble, “Let’s Sing a Capella” will host an open rehearsal “full of fun and laughter” on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 356 Summit Road in Springfield. The group meets every two weeks from 1 to 5 p.m. The sessions are open to the public, and welcome visitors to “come see what we’re all about,” according to its event post.

Tabletop Gaming Night

The public is welcome to attend the Tabletop Gaming Night hosted by the Upper Darby Library’s Primos Branch, 409 Ashland Avenue in Secane. All ages are welcome to participate in the event which will run on Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. For more information on the event, call 610-789-4440 or email [email protected]. Gamers may enjoy one of the library’s games or bring one of their own to share. There is no cost to attend.

Christmas Tree Lightings

Christmas festivities kick off this week in our area. On Friday at 6 p.m., Skippack Village holds its annual Lighting of the Skippack Village Christmas Tree at 4007 Skippack Pike. There will be music and dancing and singing along with carolers. Santa will be there with his helpers too. Call 610-584-6004 or email [email protected] for more details.

North Wales Borough holds its Annual Tree Lighting on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. at the North Penn Volunteer Fire Co., 141 S. Main St., North Wales. The event features free crafts for children, hot cocoa and a visit from Santa. Afterwards, The Halligan Bar at North Penn Social Club hosts a Late Night Happy Hour from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Doylestown Borough holds its 110th Annual Tree Lighting and Discover Doylestown’s Winterfest on Friday at 5 p.m. at Main and State streets. Music performances kick off at 5 p.m., with Santa arriving via a Doylestown Fire Co. fire truck at 6:30 p.m. to light the tree. Holiday magic will be all around, with strolling carolers, holiday characters, and more.
