Letter: Next Steps for Towamencin Post-Home Rule Charter Passage

Joyce Snyder.

(The following is a Letter to the Editor provided by Joyce Snyder, Towamencin Township Supervisor. The views expressed within are her own.)

Howdy neighbors.

First, I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to come out to vote on Tuesday and to those of you who participated in mail-in voting prior to Tuesday. Thank you for participating in our democracy and for making our community stronger with your participation.

Being the single dissenting vote with regards to the sewer sale on the Towamencin Board of Supervisors has been lonely. There have been letters written by my fellow supervisors and opinions published for which I was not consulted. When I first sought to be elected, I knew it would be difficult to be in the minority, but I had no idea how difficult it would be to know that any suggestions I may make run the risk of being disregarded. In many ways, big and small, I have been made to feel dismissed and less-than. I hope that we can all do better moving forward.

Now that the Home Rule Charter has made the sale of the sewer illegal, effective July 1, I hope that the township will save all of us time and money and begin to explore the termination available to it via the asset purchase agreement. There is nothing to gain by taking this to court, and the only people who will profit are the lawyers.

It is my hope that, now that the voters have spoken clearly and decisively, we as a township can move forward with a comprehensive plan. One of the arguments for the sewer sale was that the township needed money to address its needs. A comprehensive plan would help us prioritize our needs and even help us decide how we are going to pay for those needs in the next few decades. There is no question we need to make decisions together to shape our future. I hope that our township can take the time to present the options to all of us so that everyone’s voices can be heard as we decide how to prioritize our goals moving forward.

Again, thank you everyone for the spirited debate over the last year. It has been a real pleasure to see people actively participating in democracy in our township. Please continue to make your voices heard by attending meetings, communicating with your supervisors and with the staff of the township. You can always reach me via email at [email protected]. I hope to hear from you soon.

Signed,

Joyce Snyder
Towamencin Township Supervisor
