If you follow the Upper Gwynedd Police Department or Upper Gwynedd Fire Department feeds on Facebook, you may have seen some subtle digs evolving into some serious trolling in the last few weeks. To an outsider, it may seem strange to see normally allied organizations squaring off against each other, but locally, it signifies an annual event as predictable as birds flying south for the winter.
It’s time for the 2023 Battle of the Badges blood drive.
Each year, members of each department band together in friendly public rivalry in order to see who can generate the most support for their respective organizations via blood donations. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Upper Gwynedd Fire Department at 660 Garfield Avenue, with the goal being to enlist roughly 70 to 80 donors who collectively donate 60 pints of blood.
Afterwards, donors can vote for either the police department or the fire department, with a years’ worth of bragging rights on the line, along with the obligation that the losing organization buy donuts for the winning organization. Definitely no reinforcement of stereotypes involved in this fierce battle.
Appointments are encouraged, though walk-ins are welcome. Click here to register to donate.
According to the Upper Gwynedd Fire Department, blood donations are in especially high demand in the summer, which is why the local first responders teamed up with the American Red Cross to host the event each year.
And if you’re wondering, the Upper Gwynedd Fire Department is the reigning winner, having defeated their police counterparts last year.
