Towamencin Township supervisors last Wednesday debated the dimensions of the signage of the new Shops at Town Square — although who exactly will appear on those signs remains somewhat of a mystery.
A lease was signed last month for a food market in the former Genuardi’s space at The Shops at Town Square. The revamping of the former Towamencin Shopping Village at Allentown and Forty Foot Roads, which also was the longtime home of The Store outfitters, Sears Hardware and Boston Market among others, is one of the largest retail projects in the area in years.
The name of the market tenant in the Philadelphia Suburban Development Corporation project will not be revealed for at least a few more months, as negotiations are finalized and the architectural process advances. Planet Fitness has already opened in the shopping center.
At the supervisors meeting Wednesday, June 8, the developers proposed additional signage within the shopping center property. They filed a request to permit signage for the already approved Chipotle and Mattress Warehouse, as well as the incoming grocery store. They also asked for two pylon signs with digital displays — one at the entrance of Allentown Road and another at the entrance on Forty Foot Road.
The proposed sign for the supermarket facing Allentown Road is about 165 square feet. By the doors, there will be a 64 square-foot sign. There will also be a 177 square-foot temporary banner, alerting people to the opening of the supermarket. Facing Forty Food Road on the front edge of the supermarket, there will be a 130 square-foot sign. In the parking lot, there will be a sign above the cart return area.
The Chipotle and Mattress Warehouse buildings will have two exterior signs each; one Chipotle sign will be about 30 square feet, facing the interior of the shopping center, and the other 38 square feet, facing Forty Foot Road. Both signs for Mattress Warehouse will be 28 square feet — one facing Forty Foot Road and the other facing Allentown Road.
No vote was taken; the supervisors have 45 days to render their decision on the signage. There has been no update on the construction schedule.
