Lansdale’s newest gazebo in Memorial Park was celebrated during the Community Day in the Park event on Saturday.
The Michael DiNunzio Sr. Memorial Gazebo is dedicated to the late Michael DiNunzio, known as "Mayor Mike," to thousands of residents. It was constructed by the 150th Anniversary Committee in cooperation with the Borough of Lansdale and Discover Lansdale.
“This was the opportunity for us to create something wonderful,” Discover Lansdale board member Bill Henning said in a speech during the event. “And isn't this just that? Once we decided this gazebo was the right project, someone in our 150 committee proudly brought up the idea of naming it after someone who not only served our country during World War II — he served our community for many years with all his heart.”
DiNunzio Sr. passed away in 2011 at age 93. He owned a shoe repair and luggage business since he was 14. He served in the army during World War II and became active in civic affairs after returning home. He was involved in community organizations, including the Lansdale Rotary Club, the Visiting Nurse Association, and the Lansdale Historical Society. In 1982, he became the mayor of Lansdale and served for 26 years.
“He wore the army uniform with pride,” Clifford Bose, Commander of the American Legion, said. “He was sent to Europe in World War II. He served on the battlefront, he followed the commands of those above him, and he marched into the conflict in that distant land. He was forever changed.”
Mayor Garry Herbert acknowledged how DiNunzio Sr. stood out as Lansdale’s mayor throughout the 80s, 90s, and 2000s when there were major changes in the community.
“I'm so honored to be here to be a part and continue that legacy on forward,” Herbert said. “As I reflect on all the things that Mayor Mike delivered to this town, I can only hope to live up to that legacy and to continue that legacy going forward.”
The Discover Lansdale committee also presented a United States flag from Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick to the DiNunzio family.
Mike DiNunzio Jr. ended the dedication part of the event by reminiscing on his father’s legacy and thanking the community for keeping his spirit alive.
“It makes me smile to think that my father was here 50 years ago, helping to organize and partake in Lansdale’s celebrations, and now knowing he was here in spirit as Lansdale celebrates its 150th birthday,” DiNunzio Jr. said.
