A recent post on the NextDoor social media app has shed light on an unusually high number of Harleysville Bank customers who are experiencing debit card fraud this holiday season.
The post, which was made early last week and has since been deleted, featured a report from a Harleysville Bank customer detailing fraudulent activity on their account. In the hours that followed, at least 10 other customers chimed in regarding recent fraudulent activity on their accounts, and rumors quickly spread that there may have been some type of data breach at the bank.
With multiple people reaching out to North Penn Now in an effort to secure information about the issue, we reached out to Harleysville Bank to figure out what was happening. In response to our request for comment, Harleysville Bank CFO Shane Michalak shot down the rumor about a data breach, while also confirming his bank is dealing with an unusually high amount of debit card fraud.
“Harleysville Bank has not been breached,” Michalak said. “We are continuing to gather information on the higher level of debit card fraud our customers are experiencing.”
Michalak said fraud continues to become more common and widespread — especially around the holidays — meaning its important for customers to monitor their accounts regularly.
“If you believe your account was compromised, please visit or call your local branch,” said Michalak. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and continued support.”
To the credit of Harleysville Bank, while customers complained about the fraudulent activity in the now-deleted post, they equally heaped praise on the bank’s employees for their efforts to rectify the situation.
