The Pennsylvania Municipal Electric Association (PMEA) and the Northwest Lineman College (NLC) hosted an Advanced Transformers class in Lansdale in March.
This course was opened up to other municipalities across the state that are a part of PMEA. Multiple municipal electric companies sent representatives to Lansdale for training. The course helped linemen learn about transformer diagnostics, safety, troubleshooting, and proper use of tools and equipment.
Andy Krauss, Electric Superintendent for Lansdale Borough, offered training to utility workers. 12 of his line-workers participated in the advanced class as part of their annual membership to PMEA.
“The latest class was a big success all around,” Krauss said. “The teams were asking for more of these courses.”
Participants were given a workbook, “pocket transformer” card, access to NLC’s resource videos, and other materials. They used a mobile training lab that allowed them to work together to install and attach transformer connections and troubleshoot problems.
The tuition is paid for by PMEA. Each member community pays dues each year to participate. There are two courses, and each course has two classes. Each class hold 11 participants, so there are 22 workers in each course.
The next class will be on Rubber Glove Safety Certification. It is a five-day course that will be offered in Lansdale in May. Class size will be limited. PMEA members should expect an email to register.
