Saturday, Nov. 6 was a special day at the Salford
Mennonite-Advent Lutheran Church Garden. Steve Blank, garden manager, and Nancy
Alderfer, ever-faithful volunteer, were awarded a proclamation by the
Pennsylvania Senate, sponsored by state Senator Bob Mensch.
The Salford-Advent church garden was started 15 years ago on a one-acre plot on
the grounds of Salford Mennonite Church. Each year, tons of produce are grown
and donated to local food pantries, senior centers, nonprofit organizations and
urban congregations. In 2020, nearly 10,000 pounds of food were grown and
donated, and the totals are still being gathered for 2021. Each Saturday from
March through November, volunteers do what is needed to plant, care for, and
harvest produce, with around 60 people volunteering annually to make this
possible.
For the last nine years as garden manager, Steve has worked tirelessly and given countless hours to the ministry of the garden, sponsored by the two neighboring churches
