(The following information was provided by the office of state Rep. Todd Stephens.)
To honor a local hero and memorialize his years of service to country and community, the House Transportation Committee unanimously passed legislation authored by Reps. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) and Meghan Schroeder (R-Warminster), to rename part of County Line Road in Horsham and Warminster townships for James R. Doherty.
“Major Doherty served our nation and communities in remarkable compacities,” Stephens said. “This legislation to commemorate Maj. Doherty’s service, sacrifice and dedication to our community will serve to inspire future generations with his honorable legacy.”
House Bill 1560 would rename a portion of County Line Road in Horsham and Warminster townships after U.S. Air Force Maj. James Doherty.
Doherty served in the United States Air Force from March 20,
1943, to Oct. 1955. At the age of 18 he became a bomber pilot, serving in both
the European and Pacific Theaters in World War II as a second lieutenant. He
then served in the reserves as a first lieutenant, where he got called back to
service to aid in the Korean Conflict. Doherty continued serving our country
for five additional years in the Air National Guard.
Not only did Doherty dedicate his life to protecting our nation, he was an
active community member, serving as a member on the Horsham Township Council,
Horsham Little League, Horsham Water and Sewer Authority, Horsham Township
Parks and Recreation Board, Horsham Township Environmental Advisory Board and
Horsham Township Vacancy Board.
Additionally, he served as a member of the Hatboro-Horsham School District Board of Directors for 20 years, a member of the Horsham Lions for 10 years and the Horsham VFW for 20 years. He was elected to the Hatboro-Horsham Hall of Fame for outstanding community service. The extensive list of community roles taken on by Doherty also included serving many roles at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hatboro as the finance chairman, a council member, teacher and as a member of the communion team.
“I am proud to support legislation that honors someone who was a true asset to our community. Maj. Doherty lived an extraordinary life, not only did he sacrifice to serve our country but returned home and continued devoting his life to serving others around him,” Schroeder said. “His dedication to country and community deserves to be memorialized and remembered.”
House Bill 1560 now moves to the full House for a vote.
“I encourage my colleagues to continue moving this legislation forward swiftly to honor a hero - U.S. Air Force Maj. James Doherty,” Stephens concluded.
