Boston Style Pizza Returns to Upper Gwynedd’s Parkside Place Snack Stand

A favorite Upper Gwynedd Township pizzeria is returning for the fifth year to the snack stand at Parkside Place.

Township Commissioners Tuesday night approved a concession stand lease with Boston Style Pizza from May 1 to October 2, 2021, of which the township will be compensated $6,200 for the summer lease and 10% of gross sales over $45,000.

The snack stand is located between Park-Sci Playground and Nor-Gwyn Pool, across from the township offices and police station.

“I’m glad,” said board member Martha Similaro. “It’s my favorite place to eat.”

Board member Ruth Damsker echoed the sentiment.

“They’re great to work with,” she said.

According to a June 7 memo from Parks and Recreation Director Sarah Prebis to township Manager Sandra Brookley Zadell, Boston Style Pizza will possess the keys to the building from June to October “when we settle up and make sure everything is still in order with the concession stand.”

The pizzeria, located at the corner of Sumneytown Pike and Dickerson Road, has been renting the stand every year since 2017, and aims to coincide with the opening of Nor-Gwyn Pool.

According to its website, “Boston Style” refers to the Greek community in Boston where the first pan-pizza was invented in the early 1950s.

Boston Style Pizza is owned by Jon Humay, who bought the company 14 years ago, after working as its manager upon its startup in 2004. Humay formed JEHumay LLC, and according to the lease, the corporation would need to keep the premises clean and free of trash and keep drain-pipes in working order.

Upper Gwynedd Township is responsible for upkeep: Its taxpayers recently helped replace the exhaust system, the slushie machine and the hot dog roller. The township is also responsible for damages or repairs to the premises or plumbing, unless it was caused by negligence, per the lease.

Boston Style Pizza/JEHumay LLC is also responsible to buy and supply all utensils, food, beverages, and supplies, and must abide by all food handling laws. According to the lease, Upper Gwynedd covers trash removal, grease removal, and timely building equipment repair or replacement. The township has the right to inspect the premises at any time, per the lease.

Boston Style Pizza is also responsible for damages, loss or injury to persons or property while in operation, per the lease.

The Blue Bell-based JEHumay LLC was incorporated in 2011 and is a general partner of B & J Humay LP. B & J Humay LP purchased the Upper Gwynedd property for more than $500,000 in April 2011, per county land records.

Humay also owns Upper Crust Pizza and Grill in Jenkintown.

Boston Style Pizza is at 447 N. Sumneytown Pike, North Wales. It offers Mediterranean catering and touts fresh ingredients and no artificial additives in any of its food. It is open until 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
