(The following is a press release from the office of state Rep. Todd Stephens.)
Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) announced that the Montgomery County Workforce Development Board has received a grant to prepare students and young adults for successful careers.
The Montgomery County Workforce Development Board was awarded $100,472 by the Department of Labor and Industry. Overall, the department has awarded $4.7 million to provide 1,500 summer internships through the State/Local Internship Program (SLIP).
“This is an effective program that gives young people invaluable real-world work experience that can act as a springboard to a good career,” Stephens said. “This investment strengthens our future workforce to create a strong talent pool for the Commonwealth’s employers.”
The department awarded SLIP funding to 21 Local Workforce Development Boards that submitted proposals. The program, funded through the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, helps young adults develop workforce preparation skills by providing participants with their first work experience.
The 2020 SLIP will operate for an eight-week period between May 1 and Aug. 28. The program will offer wages at a minimum of $10.35 an hour for young adults between ages 16 and 24.
