A powerful line of thunderstorms made their way across the area on Wednesday afternoon, causing widespread damage, power outages and at least two deaths across Montgomery County.
The storms hit the Lansdale area shortly after noon, with the storm front blocking so much light that the streetlights in Lansdale Borough came on. As the storm passed through, it brought high winds and heavy rains, knocking out power and cellular service for many local residents.
In the storm’s wake was a large amount of downed trees and poles, debris strewn across streets and yards, and the collapse of a portion of the roof at the Stanbridge Apartments in Lansdale, which forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents in the 150 unit apartment community.
Montgomery County Commissioners Chair Dr. Valerie Arkoosh said that the county emergency call center received more than 1,000 9-1-1 calls between noon and 1 p.m. She added that two people had died as a result of the storm, though no details or locations were provided.
