Miller to tour Manna on Main Street in Lansdale late last month.
“Manna on Main Street continues to serve thousands of individuals living in poverty in our community every single day,” Malagari said. “Manna on Main Street feeds, trains and performs community service. When I volunteered with Manna on Main Street, I quickly learned it’s so much more than a food pantry. It’s an education center. It’s a counseling center. It’s a place for emergency financial aid. Most importantly, it’s a vital part of our community.”
Manna on Main Street is a nonprofit organization with the mission to end hunger in the North Penn region of Montgomery County. It operates a SNAP 50/50 program, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP 50/50 sites partner nonprofit organizations with United States Department of Agriculture and DHS. The nonprofit organizations use their funding and matched funds from the federal government to provide career-specific training.
The program aims to help participants get a job and excel in a career.
Miller attended Manna on Main Street after attending the Montgomery County Anti-Hunger Network to discuss food security. She spoke about the importance of food security programs and recent federal changes and proposals to SNAP that could exacerbate food insecurity for some of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens and cause added strain on food pantries.
“None of these rules do anything to help people on a path to self-sufficiency,” Miller said in a DHS statement about three recent changes and proposals to SNAP. “Those words are a hollow cover for the Trump Administration’s true motivation – to slash public assistance programs,” Miller said in a DHS statement. “But they aren’t just cutting corners and saving money. They’re cruelly eliminating a lifeline for people.”
SNAP 50/50 programs, such as the one in place at Manna on Main Street, meet the federal work requirement while helping people achieve a better life without public assistance.
