Coronavirus Update: County Surpasses 4,000 Cases, Upper Gwynedd Up to 25 Deaths

Montgomery County Board of Commissioners Chair Dr. Valerie Arkoosh.

Montgomery County officials announced 173 new COVID-19 cases and 11 new deaths on Wednesday afternoon, including 17 new cases and two more deaths in the North Penn area.

County officials stated that the high number of new cases continued to be result of mass testing at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility(MCCF), with 49 more inmates testing positive and another three positives among MCCF staff members.

Outside of MFFC, the county saw a one-day increase of 121 cases since yesterday. The county total now stands at 4,037 confirmed positive cases.

In the North Penn area, Montgomery Township has the most cases with 104 and 10 deaths, followed by Hatfield Township with 103 and two deaths, Upper Gwynedd Township with 75 and 25 deaths, Lansdale Borough with 74 and one death, Towamencin Township with 49 and two deaths, Hatfield Borough with 19 cases and North Wales Borough with nine cases.

Total cases in the North Penn area currently stand at 433 and 40 deaths. Those numbers include two new deaths reported in Upper Gwynedd Township on Wednesday, and one death that was removed from Towamencin Township’s total.

Cases in the neighboring communities are as follows:

  • Souderton Borough – 51
  • Telford Borough – 22
  • Franconia Township – 30
  • Lower Salford Township – 42
  • Skippack Township – 39 and four deaths
  • Worcester Township – 31
  • Whitpain Township – 71 and one death
  • Lower Gwynedd Township – 76 and 10 deaths
  • Horsham Township - 112 and 14 deaths

Totals across the surrounding municipalities currently stand at 474 cases and 29 deaths. As of Wednesday afternoon, the only municipality within the county to not report a positive case is Bryn Athyn.

The countywide death toll from the coronavirus now stands at 244, of which 81% have come from residents of long-term care and congregate living facilities. Upper Gwynedd Township has the third highest amount of deaths in the county at 25, behind only Upper Providence Township with 30 and Springfield Township with 42.

To date, 90 of the county’s long-term care and congregate living facilities have reported positive cases, including 1,050 positive cases among residents and 439 positive cases among staff members. Officials said those numbers may not be reflected in the countywide total, as some residents and staff members of those facilities may hold a permanent address outside of Montgomery County.

Countywide, there are currently 400 residents who are hospitalized due to the coronavirus. By contrast, on March 25 there were only 15 residents who required hospitalization.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pennsylvania reported 1,102 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 44,366 cases.

The state also announced 479 new deaths, bringing the total to 2,195 across the commonwealth. Officials noted that the increase in deaths was a result of reconciliation between reporting systems, and the newly reported deaths occurred over a period of weeks.

“As we see the number of new COVID-19 cases continuously change across the state that does not mean we can stop practicing social distancing,” Sec. of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “We must continue to stay home to protect ourselves, our families and our community. If you must go out, please make as few trips as possible and wear a mask to protect not only yourself, but others. We need all Pennsylvanians to continue to heed these efforts to protect our vulnerable Pennsylvanians, our health care workers and frontline responders.”

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 7,698 resident cases of COVID-19, and 975 cases among employees, for a total of 8,673 at 461 distinct facilities in 42 counties. Out of the state’s total deaths, 1,428 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

Additionally, 2,634 healthcare workers across the commonwealth have tested positive for the coronavirus, and 2,781 residents are currently hospitalized—602 of which require a ventilator.

To date, 170,518 residents have tested negative for the coronavirus.
