Two elite aerial units from the United States Navy and the United States Air Force provided a daytime airshow on Tuesday afternoon, as the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds participated in a flyover of the Philadelphia region in support of frontline healthcare workers who are battling the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The initiative was part of a national series of flyovers, announced by President Trump last Wednesday.
"Operation America Strong was the idea of our great military men and women," Trump said. "The Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels crews who wanted to show support to the American medical workers, who just like military members in a time of war are fiercely running forward the fight."
Nationally, reaction to the flyover has been divided, with some viewing the move as a morale booster in a time when its sorely needed, and others deriding the initiative as a political maneuver and waste of funding.
Despite the divide, thousands across the local area made their way out to view and photograph the flyover on Tuesday afternoon. Among them was North Penn Now photographer Bob Kelly, who found a great vantage point to capture the flyover across the backdrop of the Philadelphia skyline.
