More than a dozen area high school students took a tour of the Montgomery Township Police Department last week, as part of the Cradle of Liberty Council’s Explorer Program.
The Montgomery County Law Enforcement version of the program, which runs from October through May of each school year, allows select juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore a variety of positions within the realm of law enforcement, by way of monthly field trips to police stations, prisons, the district attorney’s office, county probation, forensics labs and more.
“Under the supervision of the Montgomery County Detective Bureau, Explorers learn about criminal investigation and legal prosecution by experts in the field,” said the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. “The program provides Explorers with direct and unique access to personnel from the district attorney’s office, including assistant district attorneys and detectives, allowing them to personally experience the actual work necessary to operate a large law enforcement agency.”
For November, Montgomery County Detectives Drew Marino and Joseph Kelly, along with Montgomery Township Police Lieutenant Gerry Dougherty, escorted the students through a comprehensive look at the interior workings of the Montgomery Township Police Department. The two hour tour was packed with exciting and interesting displays, including tactical planning and equipment displays by SWAT personnel, walkthroughs of the dispatch, processing center and holding cell areas, a look at the canine unit and a tour of the motor pool.
Prior to the conclusion of the tour, the students were treated to several incredible displays by the department’s canine unit, including using canines to find hidden items as well as using the canines to subdue a threat to police. (Click here for video: skip to 55 seconds in)
Montgomery County has served a post for the Explorer Program for roughly five years, and organizers have said that the program has had a tremendously positive response. To participate, Interested students are asked to contact the district attorney’s office. From there, they will need a letter of recommendation from either a police chief, teacher or guidance counselor, and following the signing of required waivers, then can then enlist into the program.
