An Ambler man who grew up in Hatfield has been selected to speak at the NAACP Ambler Branch’s Inauguration later this month.
Dustin Smith, a Hatfield native, was chosen to present the history of the NAACP and its struggles and accomplishments at the inauguration. The event will take place on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. at Ambler Borough Hall.
“I hope people get an understanding of how much of a difference the NAACP has made throughout its history,” said Smith.
The event will feature Smith’s speech as well as the announcement of the winners of the Black History Month Essay Contest. It will also showcase nine civic community committee initiatives and increase awareness of the National NAACP “Game Changers for the 21st Century.”
While Smith is a new member of the NAACP, he regrets not joining sooner. He grew up on Needham Circle in Hatfield and went to North Penn. He switched to Wissahickon when he moved to Ambler in 10th grade. He felt a wide range of emotions when he was selected to speak at the event.
“I felt honored, privileged and nervous, all at the same time. I don't know if there is a word for that, but that's how I felt,” said Smith. “I have never presented anything of this magnitude before. It feels good knowing that you are a part of something that is making a difference in this world. No matter how small of a part you play, the world needs you to play it. That's how we can make this world a better place.”
The Ambler Branch of the NAACP has been active in the community for over 80 years. It has jurisdiction in the municipalities that represent Upper Dublin, Wissahickon, North Penn and Souderton school districts. This year’s branch theme is “Driven To Serve All, Will You Join Us!”
