The Upper Gwynedd Township Fire Department hosted a Sensory Friendly Pictures with Santa event for township residents with special needs and their families on Friday night.
The event was held at the fire station, along the 600 block of Garfield Avenue, which provided a calm quiet area to visit with St. Nick. Each family was given a 15 minute time slot, allowing time for a photo and brief chat. The families that attended were extremely appreciative for the opportunity offered by the UGFD.
Amanda Hoade, chief engineer and organizer of the event, has a background in special education, and explained that some residents may not respond well to the lights and sirens and could miss the chance to see Santa during the regular Santa run.
In the future, Hoade hopes to organize training for area first responders, focusing on interacting with persons with special needs in emergency situations.
