It’s the end of an era for Lansdale Borough Council, as longtime councilman Jack Hansen participated in his final public meeting on Wednesday night.

Hansen, who has served the residents of Lansdale’s Ward Two for 12 years, announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term on council. Since joining council in 2008, Hansen has served on every borough committee with the sole exception of Parks and Recreation.

“I want to thank the residents of this borough for allowing me to serve them for the last 12 years,” said Hansen. “It has been my privilege to do their business, and attempt to make things better now than when I started. The borough was running well when I got here, but now I believe its running just a little bit better.”

Lansdale Borough Council President Denton Burnell read a certificate of recognition that had been prepared for Hansen by the office of state Senator Mensch, and Hansen also received recognition from former colleague-turned-state Rep. Steve Malagari and Lansdale Borough Mayor Garry Herbert.

A veteran of the United States Navy, Hansen previously served as council president and helped to secure millions of dollars in grant funding over his 12 year career on council. Now heading into retirement, Hansen said he was looking forward to life outside of the public arena, though he added that he may still attend meetings from time to time.

“This is not an easy job, but it is the best and most rewarding job that I have ever had,” said Hansen. “Nothing can compare to helping your friends and neighbors, unless it is family. Public life has its challenges, but I do not regret one minute of serving my community.”
