The Lansdale Historical Society released a public statement over the weekend regarding their website being hacked several weeks ago.
According to Lansdale Historical Society President Dick Shearer, the society’s computer system and archives were hacked, which has blocked them from accessing the research material used in their daily “Back Then” posts on Facebook, as well as filling requests from the community.
“Fortunately, much of the material—especially our collection of photographs, slides, negatives and PowerPoint presentations—was backed up, but we will not know for sure what is lost until the system itself is fully operational again,” said Shearer, adding that the society is taking the “unwanted opportunity” to upgrade their servers, storage, backups and security.
Those upgrades will cost money, of course, which is why the historical society is seeking monetary donations to help offset those new costs.
“Some of our members who are aware of the problem have graciously stepped forward with donations,” said Shearer. “I invite [others] to join them with a check to the Lansdale Historical Society. It will help us continue our mission of preserving the North Penn area’s rich heritage for future generations to enjoy.”
Until the systems are back to normal, the historical society is requesting patience when it comes to posts, requests and possibly repeat content. Checks can be mailed to 137 Jenkins Avenue, Lansdale PA 19446.
