The cause of a single-vehicle accident on the 100 block of Wissahickon Avenue on Tuesday night is currently under a DUI investigation, according to the Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department.
Members of the Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department, Upper Gwynedd Fire Department, North Penn Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Medical Services Corps responded to the scene shortly after 9 p.m., where they discovered that a car had driven into a tree. The driver—who has not been identified due to the investigation—reportedly suffered injuries in the accident, and became trapped in the wreckage of the heavily damaged vehicle. Emergency responders had to remove the door in order to complete the rescue, according to MontcoAlerts.
The driver’s condition is unknown at this time, and police say the investigation is ongoing. As is customary, police said they could not offer any further details about the incident until their investigation is complete.
In a post on Facebook, Upper Gwynedd Township Police Department used the incident as a reminder to use a designated-driver, taxi or ride sharing service over the holiday weekend.
“As we embark on the busiest travel day of the year and enter the holiday season, we remind you to always make good choices when consuming alcohol or drugs and driving,” the statement reads. “The human, criminal, financial and family costs can be incredibly high.”
We will update this story when more information becomes available.
