The Arts, The Underground and Everything in Between

One of the greatest challenges anyone faces in life is finding their place, be it in the grand scheme of the world or even in their own family. It can be a taxing experience beyond comprehension. People take different paths, seek unique methods and see varying results. It is a tale as old as time, and very weird when it happens to not just a person, but personified as a whole town. The recent revitalization of Lansdale is coming not a moment too soon, and nobody knew that better than the arts community.

With the upgrades and improvements throughout the borough, it should be remembered that the three main takeaways from Lansdale will always be the same

1. The artery that is the R5 will continue to bring us "down the city.” It will hopefully go on to bring new blood to the dozens of new and old businesses that we have around.

2. Oasis will still be the best place to grab a falafel in town. This sort of staple will drive new restaurants to step their game up if they expect to thrive in the wake of a revitalized borough.

3. There will always be native Lansdallions creating art and music here.

Creativity has flourished here for decades. In writing, in song, in painting, in dance…it has been around since most can remember. While our schools boast great programs for art and music, the curriculum does little for those interested in music outside the school walls. People searched elsewhere and the underground shows and scenes were what came of it.

In regards to music, the Lansdale scene has been featured in documentaries, and multiple bands from the area have played around the world. Within the art community, our local artists have had work commissioned worldwide, as well. Being outside Philadelphia, it is easy to see why art is of such interest amongst our community.

Prior to having nice things like venues and galleries, what was around was utilized. A garage with a half-busted PA was a welcomed situation. A VFW hall that will let us rent it out to a bunch of minors? Even better. When art galleries and easels are not around, it is amazing how a brick wall or train with spray paint can suffice. With these seemingly archaic methods of expression, how does this translate to what we are revitalizing around here?

It shows we had the will AND made our own way. It translates to taking that drive and applying it to the opportunities and advancements we are creating. The best part? It is already done. We have the venues. We have the shows. We have the artists. We have the bands. Taking into consideration that we have a for-us/by-us merchandising company and record labels in town, quite literally, we have it all.

Venues like The Underground at Round Guys have been hosting packed out shows multiple times a week all year. Every month at First Friday, we have performances for the whole family. There are various DIY shows all over the greater North Penn area all year. Speaking of, December 15 will see the Deck The Walls Art Show at The Underground. The New Year will hopefully follow this lead and make 2019 an even better year for the arts in the area.

Character is often used to validate struggle. If one suffers for their art, the yield will be of enhanced reward. The character we have around here is indicative of an endless struggle. It is in our character that we differ and prevail. Perhaps we are finally starting to find our place in the world, or at least our place in Montgomery County, PA.
