Ambler business seeing boost as Flyers, Sixers playoff runs drives sales
Philadelphia’s playoff excitement is turning into a business opportunity in Ambler, where local retailers say fans are fueling a noticeable spike in Flyers and 76ers merchandise sales.
According to an article from the Philadelphia Business Journal, at Jackets n’ Things in Ambler, co-owner John Ruggiero said Flyers merchandise sales have surged roughly 50% since the team’s playoff run began, with jerseys, hats, and T-shirts flying off shelves.
“It’s nice to be selling Flyers stuff again,” Ruggiero said in the interview. “We really weren’t moving much before the playoffs, but the wins against Pittsburgh got people excited.”
Ruggiero said Sixers merchandise has also increased, though at a smaller rate of about 10%. He believes many fans were surprised by the team’s postseason success.
The renewed enthusiasm comes as both Philadelphia teams advanced to the second round of the playoffs — the first time the Flyers and Sixers have both reached that stage in the same year since 2000.
Retailers across the Philadelphia region are reporting similar trends, with stores struggling to keep popular jerseys and team apparel in stock as fans jump back on the bandwagon.
Ambler businesses say the playoff atmosphere has created a noticeable uptick in foot traffic and impulse shopping, especially for Flyers gear as longtime fans embrace the team’s return to relevance after several disappointing seasons.
Orange apparel, vintage jerseys, hoodies, pennants, and player merchandise have all seen increased demand, reflecting a broader wave of playoff energy spreading from Philadelphia into the suburbs.
Local shop owners say postseason runs like these provide an important seasonal boost for small retailers, especially as independent stores compete against larger online sellers and national chains.
