The Towamencin Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently recognized Karleigh Burns and The Springhouse Tavern with a DAR Community Service Award for their exceptional generosity and leadership during a time of local need.

Established in 1719, The Springhouse Tavern is more than a restaurant, it is a living piece of local and national history. For more than three centuries, it has welcomed travelers and neighbors alike, serving as a place of nourishment, fellowship, and hospitality. Its long history evokes images of Patriot forefathers finding rest and warmth within its walls as they traveled through the region.

The tavern’s enduring spirit of service continued when it was acquired in1948 by Charles Burns, beginning a family legacy that remains strong today. Now led by fourth-generation family member Karleigh Burns, The Springhouse Tavern continues to honor its history while serving the community with compassion and care.

That commitment to service was especially evident during the recent government shutdown, when many families in the area faced food insecurity. In response, The Springhouse Tavern stepped forward in an extraordinary way, offering six nights of free dinners for entire families over a two-week period. Meals included a choice of soup or salad, a main entrée, and a beverage, all served with dignity and respect. During the first week alone, 649 meals were served. In addition, 55 family-of-four meals were provided to families connected with local elementary schools. The tavern also stocked the Ambler Community Fridge with fresh food for an entire weekend, extending its outreach beyond the restaurant’s doors.

What made this act of service especially meaningful was the experience itself. Families were able to enjoy a sit-down meal in a beautiful historic setting, offering a sense of normalcy and community during a difficult time. To support restaurant staff, a GoFundMe was established to ensure servers received their usual tips, demonstrating care not only for guests, but also for employees.

Through these actions, Karleigh Burns and The Springhouse Tavern exemplified the highest ideals of community service—honoring history while meeting present-day needs with generosity and leadership. The Towamencin Chapter, NSDAR is proud to recognize their outstanding service and their continuation of a hospitality legacy that began more than 300 years ago.
