Police said device believed to be from Korean War veteran; there is no threat to public safety Tuesday afternoon
The Montgomery County Bomb Squad was called to a Towamencin Township neighborhood Tuesday afternoon after a homeowner discovered what appeared to be an old hand grenade inside a basement.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 1:05 p.m. to the 200 block of Tanglewood Way, where the device was found and reported to 911. Towamencin Police, Towamencin Fire Company, and the county bomb squad responded to investigate and secure the scene.
Police at the scene confirmed there was no threat of safety to the public.
Towamencin Police Chief Tim Troxel said the item is believed to be a hand grenade connected to a Korean War veteran, not an active explosive device placed with intent.
However, authorities are treating the situation with caution until it can be confirmed whether the grenade is live or inert.
“All precautions are being taken until it is determined whether or not it is live or inert,” Troxel said Tuesday afternoon, noting the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials have not released additional details as bomb squad technicians continue to assess the device.
Towamencin Fire Co. assisted at the scene.
