What Makes Buying An Engagement Ring So Difficult?

Buying an engagement ring is a bit of a ritual. You want to ask the person you love to settle down with you, and you want to make sure they have the exact right ring that they’ll be proud to show off.

So before you’ve even started shopping for the ring, there’s an immense amount of pressure on.

And this pressure only seems to get worse. You hit the jewelers, you look around online, you ask for opinions from loved ones. You get as much information as possible.

But once you’re left to make the decision, there’s so much detail to consider that it’s easy to feel paralyzed in the face of choosing a ring.

What’s going on here? And what makes buying an engagement ring so difficult? The reasons are a bit different for everyone. But once you understand the factors below, you might just find ring shopping to be a bit easier.

It’s Usually a Surprise

It’s often hard to keep ring shopping a secret, especially if you’d never set foot in a certain store (or visit a certain website) without this being the reason for it. It’s this sense of secrecy that can trip a lot of people up.

But aside from that, shopping for an engagement ring requires secrecy. You can’t ask your partner along, even though you’re buying a ring you want them to like and want to wear.

And while a lot of couples talk about their jewelry preferences in advance, it’s still very different to shop for a ring in the moment.

You Need to Know Your Partner’s Ring Size

Ring sizes can be very difficult to understand, as different shops may use different measurement systems. On top of that, ring sizes fluctuate just as much as body weight does.

It’s also difficult to measure your partner’s ring size without them knowing about it.

You could borrow a ring from their jewelry box and use it to match ring sizes to, but again, this requires a level of secrecy a lot of people feel incapable of.

Gemstones Can Be Hard to Understand

No one walks into a jeweler’s and immediately understands how to buy the perfect diamond jewelry. Everyone needs a crash course in gemstone quality, hallmarks, and the 4 Cs of diamonds first.

Wrap your head around these elements and you’ll always know what you’re looking at.

You’ll be able to pinpoint if the price of the item is worth it. You’ll understand just how sparkly the gem will be when the light hits it. And you’ll be able to match these features to the things you know your partner loves in their own jewelry box.

A bit of education goes a long way, so take the time to go through a tutorial before you subject yourself to glass cabinets that make you feel so out of place.

Buying an engagement ring can be a challenge. But, if you know what makes it difficult, you can plan ahead.
