Fire brought under control quickly on Shearer Street next to North Wales Baptist Church Friday afternoon
A structure fire broke out Friday afternoon at a residence in North Wales Borough, sending flames and smoke through multiple floors and prompting an aggressive response from more than 10 fire companies.
Initial reports at 1:59 p.m. Friday indicated smoke showing from a second-floor window at the rear of a home at 132 Shearer Street.
The fire quickly escalated, extending to the third floor and into the roof area, where crews were forced to open the roof up to battle flames and check for further spread.
Emergency responders reported heavy fire conditions in the rear of 132 Shearer St., the parsonage of North Wales Baptist Church, located next door at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Multiple occupants were believed to be affected, though the status of residents and any potential injuries was not immediately available. Firefighters were employing use of chainsaws and broken windows to access and vent the fire as part of their technique.
The fire was brought under control by 2:30 p.m.
Firefighters remained on scene working to contain the blaze and prevent extension to nearby structures. Additional details are expected as the situation develops.
