The Souderton Area High School theater is set to present its spring musical, "Newsies."
Set in New York City at the turn of the 20th century and inspired by actual events, "Newsies" tells the story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy who dreams of a better life far from the crowded streets. When the city’s powerful publishers raise newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies a band of young “newsies” to stand up, speak out and fight for what’s right, said the school.
“Filled with high energy dance numbers, unforgettable characters, and a spirited message about courage and community, "Newsies" is an inspiring musical that celebrates the power of young voices to spark big change,” said the school. “Perfect for audiences of all ages, this production brings heart, humor, and nonstop excitement to the stage.”
Directed by Lori Maxwell, the show stars Elijah Bleazard as Kelly and Jane Bennett as Katherine Plumber. The roughly two-hour musical is divided into two acts and an intermission.

Audiences can expect to enjoy iconic numbers, like “King of New York” and “Seize the Day” as well as other favorites like “Santa Fe” and “Once and For All.” The performances will be accompanied by a live student pit orchestra, said Amy Stover, production assistant.
“It’s a very high-energy play with a lot of big numbers and dancing,” said Stover. “It’s very inspiring and uplifting.”
“It highlights the talents of the students and has a good message to stand up for what is right,” added Maxwell.
"Newsies" is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899 against Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolh Hearst’s newspapers, eventually leading to a citywide strike against child labor known as the Children’s Crusade.
“We just knew it would be fun and uplifting and also pertinent for the time, fighting for things you believe in and being there for your friends,” said musical director Emily Rittenhouse.
"Newsies" will run on March 19, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and March 22 at 2 p.m. at the Souderton Area High School auditorium. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online and at the box office before the performances. Tickets are $10 per person and free for gold card holders.
