How to Spend a Relaxing Weekend in Los Angeles beyond the Beaches

Los Angeles is often associated with its coastline. Santa Monica, Venice Beach and Malibu dominate many travel itineraries, especially for first-time visitors. Yet some of the city’s most enjoyable weekend experiences are found away from the ocean. Elegant shopping streets, quiet gardens and historic estates offer a slower way to explore Southern California. For a relaxed two-day plan, Beverly Hills and nearby San Marino provide a pleasant mix of architecture, shopping and green space.

Saturday morning shopping in Beverly Hills

A weekend in Los Angeles can start in Beverly Hills, where palm-lined streets and carefully designed storefronts create one of the city’s most recognizable districts. Rodeo Drive is known worldwide for its luxury boutiques, but the area is also surprisingly enjoyable to explore on foot, especially earlier in the day before the afternoon crowds arrive.

Just off Rodeo Drive sits Two Rodeo Drive, a compact pedestrian shopping street designed to resemble a European-style arcade. Cobblestone walkways, decorative balconies and pastel façades give the small street a distinctive look that attracts photographers and visitors even if they are not planning to shop. The architecture and layout make it one of the most visually distinctive corners of Beverly Hills.

The street has also appeared in several Hollywood productions. In the 2011 romantic comedy Just Go With It, Danny brings Katherine to Beverly Hills to help transform her appearance so she can convincingly pose as his former wife. The scene where they shop for her new glamorous look was filmed around Rodeo Drive and Two Rodeo Drive, locations documented among the Just Go With It filming locations in Los Angeles.

A slower pace around Beverly Hills

After exploring the shopping district, it is easy to continue the morning with a walk through Beverly Gardens Park. The park stretches along Santa Monica Boulevard and offers landscaped lawns, fountains, and shaded walking paths. It is also home to the well-known Beverly Hills sign, a frequent stop for visitors exploring the neighborhood.

The surrounding streets offer plenty of cafés and restaurants for a relaxed lunch. Many places have outdoor seating, making it easy to spend some time enjoying the warm Southern California weather before heading to the next stop of the weekend.

Sunday morning among gardens and galleries

The following day offers a completely different atmosphere with a short drive east to San Marino. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens occupies more than one hundred acres of landscaped grounds and historic buildings. Established in the early twentieth century by railroad entrepreneur Henry E. Huntington, the estate has become one of the most respected cultural sites in Southern California.

Visitors often begin with the gardens, which are divided into several themed landscapes. The Japanese Garden features traditional bridges and koi ponds, while the Chinese Garden includes pavilions, lakes, and carefully designed stone pathways. The Desert Garden contains one of the largest collections of cacti and succulents in the world. Walking paths connect each section, allowing visitors to spend hours exploring the grounds.

The estate has also been used occasionally as a filming location. In the 2003 comedy Anger Management, a scene takes place in the gardens where Adam Sandler’s character unexpectedly encounters a former school bully during a therapy outing. The elegant setting and historic architecture have made the Huntington a popular backdrop for productions looking for refined garden landscapes.

Ending the weekend nearby

After exploring the Huntington grounds, nearby Pasadena offers a pleasant place to finish the weekend. Old Pasadena features restored historic buildings, cafés and pedestrian-friendly streets that encourage a relaxed afternoon stroll.

Together, Beverly Hills and the Huntington Library show that Los Angeles offers much more than beaches and ocean views. Shopping streets, historic gardens and quiet neighborhoods reveal a different rhythm of the city. For travelers willing to explore a little farther inland, this combination makes for a calm and memorable weekend in Los Angeles.
