Senior guard’s clutch shot sends Big Red past Archbishop Wood for first PIAA victory since 2008
Souderton opened the PIAA Class 6A boys basketball tournament with a moment its fans will remember for years, as senior guard Marques Brown drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with 10.5 seconds remaining to secure a thrilling 68-66 win over Archbishop Wood on Saturday.
Brown led the way with 25 points, according to game coverage from MediaNews Group, including seven made 3-pointers, continuing a strong postseason run for the Big Red (20-8).
The dramatic shot capped a tightly contested game that saw Souderton battle one of the Philadelphia Catholic League’s top teams from start to finish. Senior point guard Chanse Salone added 11 points and nine assists, according to gameplay coverage, while Nate Rusike chipped in 11 points as Souderton relied on balanced scoring and long-range shooting to keep the Vikings on their heels.
Archbishop Wood briefly grabbed the lead late in the fourth quarter after Brady MacAdams hit a 3-pointer with just over 30 seconds remaining.
But Souderton answered on the next possession, as Rusike found Brown, who used a quick pump fake and step to create space before knocking down the decisive shot.
When Wood failed to get a final attempt off before the buzzer, Souderton students rushed the court to celebrate the program’s first state playoff victory since 2008, according to coverage
The win also marked Souderton’s first appearance in the PIAA state tournament since 2012 and the 100th career coaching victory for first-year Big Red coach Brendan Stanton.
