Sumneytown Pike shut down for nearly four hours; crash remains under investigation
An Upper Gwyendd Township man suffered serious head injuries Wednesday evening after his vehicle crashed into the railroad tunnel wall along Sumneytown Pike in Upper Gwynedd Township near Merck, prompting a lengthy road closure and a technical rescue to remove him from the car, police said.
The crash occurred Wednesday at 6:28 p.m. on Sumneytown Pike near Kori Restaurant, according to Upper Gwynedd Police Deputy Chief Ted Caiola.
Caiola said the incident involved one vehicle, a Toyota Matrix, and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
Firefighters from Upper Gwynedd and Fairmount fire companies had to remove the driver by cutting open the vehicle, Caiola said.
The driver, 50, suffered serious head injuries and was transported by ambulance to St. Luke's Grand View Hospital, police said. He was the only injured party.
Police closed Sumneytown Pike between Church Road and Allentown Road while crews worked the scene and investigators conducted follow-up. The scene was cleared at 10:34 p.m.
Responding agencies included Upper Gwynedd Police, VMSC, Upper Gwynedd Fire Department, North Penn Fire Co., the North Penn Area Crash Team, Towamencin Police, and Montgomery Township Police.
Police said charges are not anticipated at this time, but the investigation remains active. Officers spoke with multiple witnesses at the scene, Caiola said.
