A Souderton man is facing multiple charges after police said he fought with officers and injured one of them during a traffic stop on an icy roadway last week.

Jonathan James Timms, 42, of the 300 block of North Main Street, is charged with aggravated assault, along with additional misdemeanor counts including simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to a criminal complaint. He is also charged with summary offenses including harassment and driving while his operating privilege was suspended.

Souderton Borough Police said an officer attempted to stop Timms around 5:27 p.m. Friday after observing him driving a black 2010 Toyota Tundra pickup despite having a suspended license. The vehicle made several quick turns before stopping near 320 North Main Street on what police described as an icy, inclined roadway. Officers said the truck had difficulty climbing the hill and slipped before coming to a stop.

According to the affidavit, Timms allegedly refused repeated commands to exit the vehicle. Police said an officer observed a red Milwaukee-brand pocketknife on Timms’ leg and attempted to secure it.

“When I reached for it, he struck me in the chest with his left hand. I reached inside of the vehicle with both hands, removed him from the vehicle and put him on the ground outside of the vehicle,” police wrote in the affidavit.

Officers reported that Timms continued to resist on the ground while still in possession of the knife before being subdued and handcuffed. Police noted the ground was icy and snowy, with stones and concrete objects in the vicinity.

One assisting officer sustained a laceration and abrasion to his knee that appeared to require medical attention, police said. The initial officer also reported minor cuts and abrasions to his hands and knees during the struggle.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
