Snow emergencies have been declared in Franconia Township and Lower Salford Township as a significant winter storm is expected to impact the Indian Valley beginning Saturday evening.

As of mid-afternoon Friday, Souderton Borough had not issued a snow emergency declaration.

Franconia Township’s snow emergency takes effect at noon Saturday and will remain in place until further notice. Township officials said heavy snow is expected to begin Saturday night and may transition to sleet and freezing rain, creating icy and potentially dangerous travel conditions. High winds and bitter cold temperatures could further complicate road conditions, including drifting snow.

Lower Salford Township declared a snow emergency beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Monday, urging residents to move vehicles off roadways to allow plow crews to operate safely and efficiently. Officials emphasized that all cul-de-sacs are designated snow emergency routes, and vehicles must be removed from those streets during the emergency period.

Both municipalities are asking residents to avoid nonessential travel during the storm and to refrain from parking on township roads. Vehicles that obstruct plowing operations or traffic flow may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense. Police are asking motorists to call 911 if a vehicle becomes disabled and cannot be moved.

Residents in Franconia are also reminded that sidewalks must be cleared within 30 hours after snowfall ends, with a recommended cleared path of at least 30 inches. Snow and ice may not be pushed into streets or gutters, as doing so hampers plowing operations and creates hazardous conditions. Township officials further cautioned drivers to fully clear snow and ice from their vehicles before traveling, noting that falling ice can endanger other motorists.

Officials in both townships encouraged residents to monitor municipal websites and social media pages for updates as conditions evolve throughout the storm.
