Snow emergencies have been declared in Franconia Township, Souderton Borough and Lower Salford Township as a significant winter storm is expected to impact the Indian Valley beginning Saturday evening.

Franconia Township’s snow emergency takes effect at noon Saturday and will remain in place until further notice. Township officials said heavy snow is expected to begin Saturday night and may transition to sleet and freezing rain, creating icy and potentially dangerous travel conditions. High winds and bitter cold temperatures could further complicate road conditions, including drifting snow.

Lower Salford Township declared a snow emergency beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Monday, urging residents to move vehicles off roadways to allow plow crews to operate safely and efficiently. Officials emphasized that all cul-de-sacs are designated snow emergency routes, and vehicles must be removed from those streets during the emergency period.

Souderton Borough Mayor Dan Yocum declared a snow emergency for the borough, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Residents on a snow emergency route must move vehicles, as parking on the street is prohibited. Residents can utilize the municipal parking lots on Main Street, Chestnut Street, Railroad Street, and at Community Pool, the borough said.

Residents must also clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the last snowfall. Souderton Borough officials said it is illegal to dispose of snow from your sidewalk or property into the roadway, as it can cause hazards for crews and those traveling.

All three municipalities are asking residents to avoid nonessential travel during the storm and to refrain from parking on township roads. Vehicles that obstruct plowing operations or traffic flow may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense. Police are asking motorists to call 911 if a vehicle becomes disabled and cannot be moved.

Residents in Franconia are also reminded that sidewalks must be cleared within 30 hours after snowfall ends, with a recommended cleared path of at least 30 inches. Snow and ice may not be pushed into streets or gutters, as doing so hampers plowing operations and creates hazardous conditions. Township officials further cautioned drivers to fully clear snow and ice from their vehicles before traveling, noting that falling ice can endanger other motorists.

Officials in both townships and Souderton encouraged residents to monitor municipal websites and social media pages for updates as conditions evolve throughout the storm.
