Souderton’s own Northbound is turning the deep magic of the moment into a refreshing tribute cocktail following the death of Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir, who died last weekend at age 78.
Hearts are heavy in the restaurant’s dining room, but they are also raising spirits — literally and figuratively — to honor the man whose music helped define a generation.
The new cocktail, dubbed “The Music Never Stops,” is a smoky, herbal and sweet milk punch inspired by Bobby’s adventurous spirit and the jam-band ethos of exploration that defined his six-decade journey through rock and roll.
With mezcal, Earl Grey gin, coconut, pear, lavender and lemon — “clarified through milk” — the drink reflects a kind of alchemy that Deadheads know all too well: unexpected combinations coming together into something memorably melodic.
It is served with a wink to the band’s beloved lyricism and a nod to “I Know You Rider,” the classic song that inspired Northbound’s name and remains woven into Dead shows and memories alike:
"The Sun will shine in my back door someday.
March winds will blow all my troubles away.
I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train;
I wish I was a headlight, on a North bound train;
I'd shine my light through cool Colorado rain."
In a heartfelt post on social media, Northbound wrote that Weir was “a legend of a human and an inspirational force to so many.”
The restaurant invited patrons to “take a step back and get another step back in Bobby’s honor” while raising a glass to the idea that, indeed, the music never stops.
