More than $80,000 in state funding is headed to local nonprofits working to combat food insecurity, according to an announcement from State Rep. Steve Malagari.

The funding comes through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Food Recovery Infrastructure Grant Program, part of a $4.1 million statewide investment designed to help organizations store, transport and prepare recovered food for redistribution.

The grants reimburse the cost of equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, microwaves, and both refrigerated and non-refrigerated vehicles — tools intended to ensure safe and fresh food can reach residents in need rather than end up in landfills.

Studies indicate that more than one-third of the U.S. food supply is wasted before reaching consumers, while roughly 1 in 7 households experiences food insecurity. The FRIG Program aims to redirect surplus food to vulnerable populations while reducing environmental waste.

“This program represents the type of policy solution I’ve championed since I was first elected,” Malagari said. “It addresses the challenge of food insecurity while also building community and reducing waste. This funding brings us one step closer to eradicating food insecurity across our community.”

Since the program’s inception, three organizations in the 53rd Legislative District have received awards totaling more than $80,000. Those include:

  • $49,224 to Manna on Main Street
  • $12,586 to Emmanuel Lutheran Church
  • $19,357 to Garden of Health Inc.

Malagari said nonprofits interested in applying for future rounds of the FRIG Program can contact his district office at 267-768-3671 or [email protected] for assistance.
