Girls across the region will have the opportunity to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and math later this month as AAUW Lansdale Branch hosts its annual STEM for Girls event.

The program will be held March 28 at the Blue Bell Campus of Montgomery County Community College. Organizers say parents must register their children by March 21 due to advanced planning and scheduling requirements.

AAUW Lansdale, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization focused on advancing equity for women and girls, partners with Montgomery County Community College to bring the event to life. The branch recruits women currently working in STEM fields — including scientists, engineers and architects — along with the college’s STEM faculty to lead interactive sessions for participating students.

“These women volunteer their time, talent, and passion to inspire and excite the girls to opportunities in STEM. We believe girls need to ‘See it, to be it’,” the organization said in a press release.

The event is designed to highlight the growing importance of STEM education in building critical-thinking skills needed for innovation and success in a high-tech workforce. While STEM careers often offer higher earning potential, organizers note that women remain underrepresented in these fields, contributing to the broader gender pay gap.

“If less than half the population is not contributing to innovative ideas, we are not getting the best ideas,” the release stated.

Fran D’Angelo, chair of the event, said the goal extends beyond exposure to technical concepts.

“The goal is not only to expose the girls to innovative ideas, but to women who have made careers, changed careers, and have balanced a personal life also,” D’Angelo said. “We want girls to know that careers do not prevent marriage and family.”

Participants will rotate through five interactive sessions, each lasting 50 minutes, in small-group settings. Parents are invited to attend the opening remarks and keynote presentation.

Additional details and registration information are available at the AAUW Lansdale website.
