An 84-year-old man from Coatesville, Chester County, died Monday night from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle crash on Sumneytown Pike, Towamencin Police Chief Timothy Troxel confirmed.

The crash occurred at 11:58 a.m. between Mainland and Wambold roads and involved a 2019 Chevy Traverse, a 2013 Toyota Sienna and a 2005 Ford Taurus. Police said the Traverse, driven by a 77-year-old Coatesville man, was traveling in the wrong lane of traffic when it struck the Sienna head-on. The Taurus then impacted the vehicles after the initial collision.

Six people were injured and transported to area hospitals. The 84-year-old passenger in the Traverse was pronounced dead at 11:38 p.m. from injuries sustained in the crash, Troxel said.

There were no known injuries to the driver of the Taurus, a 49-year-old woman from East Greenville.

The Sienna was driven by a 32-year-old woman from Harleysville and carried four passengers. Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation and any determination on charges is pending completion of that investigation.

Sumneytown Pike remained closed until 2:39 p.m. while emergency crews worked the scene. Responding agencies included Towamencin Police, Towamencin Fire Company, VMSC, Skippack EMS and Second Alarmers Rescue Squad.

Police did not release the name of the deceased, as the investigation is ongoing.

About 15 minutes later, at 12:13 p.m., police were dispatched to a separate crash at Sumneytown Pike and Carrol Road involving a 2017 Buick Encore and a 2017 Nissan Sentra.

Police said the Encore, driven by an 87-year-old Lansdale woman, was operating erratically prior to the crash. The vehicle also carried a 90-year-old male passenger from Lansdale. The Sentra was driven by a 76-year-old Lansdale man with a 36-year-old passenger.

One person was transported to a hospital following that crash. Multiple traffic citations were issued in connection with the incident, police said.

That roadway was cleared by 1 p.m. Towamencin Police were assisted by Upper Gwynedd Police, Towamencin Fire Company and VMSC.
