A Hatfield Borough man is facing animal cruelty charges after police said he admitted placing a live pet rabbit inside a trash bag and leaving it in a Dumpster behind a Towamencin Township hardware store.

Kevin Kasak, 55, of the 20th block of West Broad Street, and formerly of Doylestown in Bucks County, was charged by Towamencin Police on Monday with animal cruelty, neglect of animals by failing to provide sustenance and water, and neglect of animals by failing to provide shelter and protection, all misdemeanors, according to court records.

Towamencin Township Police were dispatched at 9:38 p.m. Jan. 21, 2025 to the rear of Harbor Freight, 1758 Allentown Road, after a passerby searching through a Dumpster reported finding a live rabbit inside a tied trash bag, according to the criminal complaint.

Officers located a white and gray rabbit that appeared to be a domesticated pet and noted the animal had no access to food or water. The temperature at the time was about 36 degrees, police said

Investigators later received information identifying Kasak as the rabbit’s owner. When contacted by police, Kasak agreed to come to the station to speak with an officer, according to the affidavit.

Before details of the investigation were shared, he allegedly responded that he knew why police wanted to speak with him and said, "I’m guilty as charged."

Kasak told police the rabbit belonged to his family and that another rabbit had died days earlier. He said he had contacted the SPCA about surrendering the surviving rabbit but was told there could be a delay.

According to the affidavit, Kasak said he “made a terrible mistake,” adding that he did not know what else to do. He admitted placing the rabbit in a trash bag and leaving it in a Dumpster behind Harbor Freight during the afternoon of Jan. 21, police said.

Court documents state Kasak’s account of the incident matched details investigators had already gathered, including the location and condition in which the rabbit was found

The rabbit was taken for care after being rescued, according to police.

Kasak was charged via summons. There is no bail at present. A preliminary hearing is set for April 1 before Magisterial District Judge Ed Levine.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
