Three Legged Hare hosts “Love at First Bite” event with local chocolate and floral partners
A Lansdale micro-bakery known for its hand-held savory pies is inviting the community to warm up with a little flavor this Valentine’s weekend.
Three Legged Hare will host a two-day tasting event, “Love at First Bite,” on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature samples, special discounts and collaborations with two neighboring small businesses.
Owner Sandra McCabe said the idea was as much about lifting spirits in the heart of winter as it was about celebrating Valentine’s Day.
“I wanted to create something fun that would entice people to come out and brave the cold of February,” McCabe said. “It’s a tough month — by now, winter feels never-ending, and I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m no longer excited by the cold and snow.”
She also saw it as a way to spotlight fellow local makers.
“At 1200 Walnut Street in Lansdale, you can find everything you need for a perfect Valentine’s gift — beautiful flowers, sweet treats, and savory pies — all in one place,” she said.
A tart that makes people smile
Front and center at the tasting will be Three Legged Hare’s popular Sour Goat Tarts, a small but flavor-packed pastry that has built a loyal following.
“The Sour Goat Tart is really a mash-up of contrasting tastes and textures,” McCabe said. “You get the buttery crunch of the handmade shell, followed by the creamy smoothness of the goat cheese, and then the sweet-tart pop of the sour cherry fruit spread. Each bite hits a different note, but they complement each other.”
And there is a whimsical finishing touch. “And of course, there’s the crowning glory on top—the tiny bunny head that makes people smile. For Valentine’s Day, though, it just might turn into a heart.”
During the event, shoppers can take advantage of $2 off all mini tart packs.
Chocolate and flowers join the party
Joining the tasting is Dairy Velvet, a local chocolatier McCabe connected with by chance.
“Nadia, the creator and owner, stopped into my store one day and we started talking,” McCabe said. “She told me about a dessert she makes for her family, and not long after, she came back with samples. The moment I tasted them, I knew they were something special — I’d never had anything quite like it.”
Dairy Velvet’s specialty is a sweet farmer’s cheese coated in chocolate. “Somewhere between a cheesecake bite and a chocolate bar,” McCabe said. Visitors can sample vanilla and chocolate varieties during the event.
Right next door, Genaurdi Florist will offer floral arrangements, rounding out what McCabe calls a one-stop Valentine’s destination. The husband-and-wife team behind the shop, she said, have “some wonderful ideas for Valentine’s Day, making them a perfect fit for this collaboration.”
Not your typical bakery
Three Legged Hare stands apart from most bakeries by leaning savory.
“Three Legged Hare isn’t a traditional bakery, and that’s intentional,” McCabe said. “My focus is on the savory rather than the sweet, with just a couple of exceptions like the Sour Goat Tarts and my seasonal Orchard Cake.”
Everything is made from scratch, from crusts to fillings. “These aren’t standard bakery items—they’re savory, comforting, and made to be delicious,” she said.
For McCabe, the ideal Valentine’s celebration is simple and local.
“Come to Three Legged Hare, meet and talk with the bakers, taste some delicious samples, and pick up something special for yourself or your sweetheart. Then head right next door to Genaurdi Florist and choose a beautiful bouquet to finish it off. It’s simple, fun — and you’re supporting local businesses at the same time," she said.
