A two-time top cop now has a new title.

Upper Gwynedd’s police department celebrated the promotion of longtime officer Jonathan Gill to the rank of sergeant this week.

“Back in February we had a police officer retire, and that officer happened to be a sergeant. Therefore, we had a vacancy amongst our ranks,” said commissioner Denise Hull.

After that retirement, Hull told her fellow commissioners on Tuesday night, the township activated their civil service process and administered a series of written exams and oral interviews, with Gill topping the list of candidates that was finalized in March. A North Penn High School graduate, Gill earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Widener University, then graduated from the Montgomery County Police Academy in 2009, and has since earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from St. Joseph’s University. Gill worked as a correctional officer for the county’s prison system before joining Upper Gwynedd in 2010.

“He was assigned to the patrol division, and then assigned as a detective in 2022. He’s served as a special county detective with the Montgomery County drug task force, and gun task force,” Hull said.

Gill has also served as a field training officer, a firearms and Taser instructor and armorer for the department, and chaired the committee that organized a 75th anniversary banquet for the force earlier this year.

“Officer Gill has received several letters of appreciation, numerous official commendations, two lifesaving commendations, and was nominated by his fellow officers to be the 2013 and 2024 Officer of the Year,” Hull said.

As she administered the oath to Gill, district Judge Suzan Leonard said the officer has become a familiar face over nearly a decade.

“Not only is he a gentleman, he’s very professional, he’s well-prepared, and he’s very intelligent. It’s always a pleasure to have him come into my courtroom,” she said.
