A fast-moving fire at a Lansdale home early Tuesday morning displaced multiple residents and caregivers, but no injuries were reported thanks to a rapid response by first-arriving crews.

According to Fairmount Fire Company Chief Gavin Butler, firefighters were dispatched at 1:13 a.m. to the 300 block of Pennbrook Avenue for a reported building fire.

"All crews operating at the scene did a fantastic job with fire suppression, search operations, and communicating with one another," Butler said.

Initial reports indicated a mattress may have ignited, though the exact cause remains under investigation by the Lansdale Fire Marshal’s Office, per standard protocol.

The home, operated by nonprofit COMHAR Inc., serves individuals with mental health issues and special needs requiring 24-hour care.

Three residents and at least two caregivers were displaced as a result of the fire. All occupants were safely evacuated prior to conditions worsening, Butler said.

Fire crews encountered heavy fire conditions upon arrival, with the blaze quickly escalating to fully involved status. However, Butler said initial operating crews acted swiftly to confirm all occupants were out and aggressively attack the fire, preventing further spread and saving a large portion of the structure.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down by 1:44 a.m. and placed under control at 2:05 a.m.

The incident remained a single-alarm fire, though additional engines and EMS units were called to assist with crew rotation and rehabilitation.

Responding agencies included Fairmount Fire Co. of Lansdale, Upper Gwynedd Fire, North Penn Fire Co., Fire Department of Montgomery Township, Hatfield Fire Co., Towamencin Vol. Fire Co., Colmar Fire Co., Worcester Fire Co., Lansdale Police, VMSC Emergency Medical Services, and Second Alarmer's Rescue Squad. Wissahickon Fire Company provided station coverage during the response.

Minor heat damage was reported to a neighboring property, including broken windows, but the fire was largely contained to the building of origin.

"The fire was quickly extinguished by volunteer firefighters of the Lansdale and surrounding North Penn community, with no injuries reported," Butler said.

Hancock Street was briefly reduced to one lane during the response but reopened fully overnight. Most units cleared the scene shortly after 4:30 a.m., with the fire marshal remaining to continue the investigation.

Butler said displaced residents were being connected with appropriate resources for relocation.

Butler credited the coordinated efforts of local volunteer firefighters and emergency responders for preventing injuries and limiting damage.

“We're fortunate to have so many dedicated men and women in our area. I'm proud of the work they do and the amount of effort they put into training and preparing for incidents like this,” Butler said, praising crews for their communication and execution during the early morning emergency.

A representative at Comhar Inc. told NorthPennNow Tuesday afternoon, about 15 hours after the fire, that the nonprofit was "dealing with it" as the incident was still "fresh" and the company was still dealing with developments in the fire.

Comhar, which is celebrating 50 years of service, recently launched its "Empowering Brighter Tomorrows" fundraising campaign, with nearly $2,000 raised toward the $20,000 goal.
