DA continues review of police response as juvenile cases move forward

A second juvenile charged in the Feb. 20 Quakertown protest confrontation has had felony charges withdrawn, marking another shift in the high-profile case stemming from the student-police clash.

According to PhillyBurbs.com, an attorney for one of the teens confirmed that felony counts, including aggravated assault, were dropped for his 15-year-old client, who was among those first approached by police during the incident. The teen still faces lesser charges in juvenile court and is expected to proceed toward trial.

The development follows a similar outcome for another defendant whose case was resolved last month, while attorneys for a third teen say prosecutors have also offered to withdraw felony charges in that case. The status of the remaining defendants is unclear, though legal proceedings are ongoing.

The charges stem from a confrontation between police and students who left Quakertown Community High School and gathered in the borough’s downtown following the cancellation of an on-campus demonstration.

Defense attorneys have argued the teens acted in self-defense, claiming Police Chief Scott McElree, who was in plain clothes, did not identify himself before engaging with the group.

The incident, captured on widely circulated videos, remains under investigation by the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office as questions continue about police actions during the protest. McElree, who has defended his conduct in reports, remains out on leave following injuries sustained during the encounter.
