It’s no surprise to feel tears forming in your eyes when you see a very special person receiving a very special honor.

On Wednesday, April 1, that person was Jane Kim, Director of Client Engagement and Initiatives at Mission Kids Child Advocacy Center.

The honor: Blue Ribbon Champion for Kids, for exceptional commitment to preventing child abuse and strengthening families statewide, presented by the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance.

The recognition comes as Pennsylvania observes National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, a time dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening efforts to support children and families.

Jane’s quiet words, humbly spoken, reached deeply into the hearts of those who gathered to recognize her for extraordinary leadership and unwavering dedication to protecting children.

Speaking candidly about the emotional weight of this work, Jane described it as “drinking poison every day”, while reminding attendees that the antidote lies in intentionally seeking out what heals the soul like moments and connections that are pure, beautiful and real.

Jane was recognized for her extraordinary leadership and unwavering dedication to protecting children. Throughout her career, she has worked tirelessly to ensure that children impacted by abuse and neglect receive the support, advocacy, and services they need to heal and thrive.

At Mission Kids, Kim leads a team of professionals coordinating more than 1,200 child abuse cases annually, ensuring each child receives trauma-informed forensic interviews, advocacy, medical and therapy services. Her leadership has helped transform the multidisciplinary team into a comprehensive safety net that not only responds to abuse but actively works to prevent re-victimization and support long-term healing for children and families.

Jane’s impact extends beyond individual cases. She has developed innovative initiatives including specialized trainings on human trafficking, trauma-informed court practices, and support groups for non-offending caregivers. She also spearheaded Montgomery County’s first multidisciplinary strategy to combat human trafficking, training more than 150 law enforcement officers and advocating at the state level for stronger protections for vulnerable youth.

Detective Ernie Morris from Limerick Township Police Department was also honored for his commitment to child protection and his collaborative work in supporting multidisciplinary responses to child abuse investigations. His efforts have been instrumental in strengthening partnerships and ensuring the safety and well-being of children in Limerick Township and surrounding communities.

“Jane and Detective Morris exemplify what it means to be champions for children,” said Leslie Slingsby, CEO of Services and Operations at Mission Kids. “Jane’s leadership has transformed how we serve children and families, ensuring that every child is met with compassion, expertise, and a path toward healing and justice. Detective Morris’s dedication to collaboration and child safety strengthens the entire system of care. Together, their work makes a profound and lasting impact on our community.”

The Blue Ribbon Champion for Safe Kids Award recognizes professionals, volunteers, and community leaders who go above and beyond, often without recognition, to prevent child abuse and improve outcomes for children and families.
